The house

Patonga has one road in, one pub and a ferry to Palm Beach. That is the appeal.

Cloud 9 is a newly completed two-storey home at the quiet end of the Central Coast, where the Hawkesbury River meets Broken Bay. It was designed for groups who want to arrive, unpack once and spend the week between the pool, the deck and the beach.

Inside there is pale stone, oak joinery, linen curtains and a wood fireplace for cooler nights. Outside there is a covered alfresco kitchen, a round plunge pool, a chill-and-play garden with built-in banquette seating under the old tree, and a garage for the car and the beach gear.

Breakfast at the long table

The kitchen runs the length of the living space, with a stone island, full-height oak cabinetry and room for more than one cook. The dining table seats the whole group, and the doors open straight onto the deck.

13:00Afternoon

Pool, shade and a long lunch

The covered alfresco has its own barbecue kitchen and a long timber table. The round plunge pool sits a few steps away, fenced in glass and wrapped in spotted gum decking. Come back from the beach and use the outdoor shower on the way through.

16:30Late afternoon

Chill and play out the back

Out the back, a built-in hardwood banquette wraps a sandy courtyard under a big old tree, with a dartboard on the wall and room for the kids to run around. Low deck lights come on at dusk along the steps from the living room. The Boathouse is a short stroll away if nobody wants to cook.

The fire, then bed

The lounge is built around a freestanding wood fireplace, with deep curved sofas, soft rugs and a second sitting area by the garden doors. The bedrooms are cove-lit and quiet, with ceiling fans and full-length curtains.

Sleeping

Three kings and four king singles.

Room for four couples plus the kids, or ten friends. Each bedroom has a ceiling fan, soft carpet and full-length curtains.

The village

Patonga

A small fishing village at the mouth of the Hawkesbury, hemmed in by national park on one side and water on the other. There are no shops to speak of. Mornings start with a swim in the bay, afternoons drift toward the pub, and the only traffic jam is at the ferry wharf on Sunday.
